Stick insects

Stick insects are one of those very strange “bugs” found mostly in the jungle.  I saw a few in Ecuador, so I thought I’d blog about them today.

Stick insects or “walking sticks” are in the order Phasmatodea.  According to Encyclopedia of Life, there are 3000 species worldwide, only 15 of those being found in Europe.  Stick insects are found worldwide but their greatest diversity comes from tropical forests (Such as Ecuador’s cloud forests).  People even keep stick insects as pets occasionally and I must admit they are one of the most interesting insects to watch.  Below are some of my favorite stick insect pics from Ecuador.
